Puppy Grooming in Battle, East Sussex

GENTLE BEGINNINGS. HAPPY GROOMS.

Gentle First Grooms for Puppies

At Cockapoo Cottage & Friends, Claire provides gentle, one-to-one puppy grooming from her peaceful grooming cottage in Battle, East Sussex, welcoming puppies from Hastings, Bexhill, Crowhurst, Catsfield, Sedlescombe, Westfield, Robertsbridge, Ninfield, Staplecross, Rye, Herstmonceux, Heathfield, Tenterden, Tunbridge Wells and surrounding towns and villages.

Claire’s approach to puppy grooming is designed to introduce young dogs gradually to the sights, sounds, handling and equipment involved in regular grooming. Rather than rushing a puppy through their first appointment, Claire gives them time to explore, settle and become familiar with their new surroundings, helping those early grooming experiences feel calm and positive.

From a puppy’s first introduction to grooming through to their first Full Grooms, Claire’s Puppy Introduction Package helps puppies gradually become familiar with the grooming routine they may experience throughout their lives.

Claire’s puppy grooming approach includes:

  • Gentle First Introductions: Puppies are given time to explore the grooming cottage and become familiar with Claire, their surroundings and the grooming experience.

  • One-to-One Puppy Grooming: Claire works individually with each puppy in her peaceful grooming environment, giving them her full attention throughout their appointment.

  • Handling & Grooming Familiarity: Puppies are gradually introduced to being handled around areas such as their paws, face and coat as part of becoming comfortable with grooming.

  • Grooming Equipment & Sounds: Brushes, combs, dryers and other unfamiliar grooming experiences can be introduced gradually rather than all at once.

  • Individual Reassurance: Every puppy has their own personality and confidence level, so Claire can adapt her approach to the puppy in front of her.

  • Building Grooming Confidence: Early appointments are designed to help grooming become a familiar and positive part of a puppy’s routine as they grow.

Whether your puppy is naturally confident and curious or needs a little more patience and reassurance, Claire’s calm approach to puppy grooming focuses on helping them feel comfortable while gradually building familiarity with the grooming process.

BUILDING CONFIDENCE FROM THE START

Calm One-to-One Puppy Grooming

At Cockapoo Cottage & Friends, puppy grooming is about more than simply giving your puppy their first bath or trim. Claire uses those early appointments to help puppies become familiar with the handling, equipment and routine involved in being professionally groomed.

Some puppies are naturally happy to investigate everything around them, while others can be more cautious when faced with unfamiliar sounds, sensations or handling. Claire’s peaceful, one-to-one grooming environment allows her to work with each puppy individually, giving them time, reassurance and breaks where needed rather than expecting every puppy to respond in the same way.

Claire’s Puppy Introduction Package provides a gradual introduction to professional puppy grooming, progressing from those important first experiences towards more complete grooming appointments as confidence and familiarity develop.

Puppy grooming at Cockapoo Cottage & Friends focuses on:

  • A Calm Grooming Environment: Claire works from her peaceful cottage-style grooming cabin in Battle, away from the feel of a busy multi-dog salon.

  • Individual Puppy Care: One-to-one appointments allow Claire to focus on your puppy’s temperament, reactions and individual grooming needs.

  • Positive First Experiences: Early puppy grooming appointments are approached gently, with the aim of helping unfamiliar grooming experiences become more familiar.

  • Gradual Progression: Claire’s Puppy Introduction Package introduces puppies to grooming over a series of appointments rather than expecting everything from them immediately.

  • Preparing for Regular Grooming: Puppies can begin becoming accustomed to the coat care, handling and grooming routines they may need as they grow.

  • Support for Puppy Owners: Claire also provides guidance on preparing your puppy for grooming at home, including becoming familiar with handling, brushing and having areas such as their paws touched.

Starting puppy grooming early gives your puppy the opportunity to become familiar with professional grooming while they are young. Claire’s approach combines gentle handling, patience and individual attention in a calm environment designed around helping puppies build confidence with grooming.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN A PUPPY GROOM?

Puppy Grooming is designed to gently introduce your puppy to professional grooming rather than expecting them to manage a complete adult groom straight away. Depending on your puppy and their stage of introduction, Claire can gradually familiarise them with handling, brushing, bathing, drying, grooming equipment, nail and paw handling and the sights and sounds of the grooming environment.

HOW LONG WILL MY DOG BE WITH YOU?

Every dog is different, so grooming times can vary depending on your dog’s coat condition, temperament, age, and individual needs.

As a general guide:

Bath & Tidy Appointments / Puppy Intro Sessions: approximately 1.5 to 2 hours

 Full Grooms & Premium Pamper Appointments: approximately 2.5 to 4 hours

I work on a calm, one-to-one basis and never rush appointments. Some dogs are naturally relaxed and enjoy the grooming process, while others — particularly elderly, anxious, or nervous dogs — may need additional comfort breaks, rest periods, reassurance, or extra time to settle.

Your dog’s comfort and wellbeing will always be far more important to me than rushing through an appointment.

As soon as your dog’s groom is completed, I will contact you to arrange collection.

Please kindly avoid arriving early or waiting outside the salon, as many dogs become excited when they see their owners and this can increase anxiety or make it difficult for them to settle and finish their groom calmly.

You can also check out our Places to Visit page to explore the lovely historic town of Battle if you choose to do so.

WHY DOES MY PUPPY NEED REGULAR GROOMING INTRODUCTIONS?

Regular early grooming experiences can help your puppy become familiar with being handled and with the equipment, sounds and sensations involved in professional grooming. Claire's Puppy Grooming appointments are designed to build that familiarity gradually, helping prepare your puppy for the grooming they may need as their adult coat develops.

WHEN SHOULD I BRING MY PUPPY FOR ITS FIRST GROOM?

I recommend introducing puppies to grooming as early as possible, ideally once they are fully vaccinated and able to go on walks

— usually around 3 to 4 months of age.

The earlier your puppy begins their grooming journey, the easier and more positive the experience is likely to be for them in the

future. Early introductions help puppies become familiar with bathing, drying, brushing, handling, and the sounds and sensations

involved in grooming.

I ideally like to see puppies every 2–3 weeks during their first 6 months, allowing me to gently build their confidence and help them

become relaxed, happy, and comfortable with the grooming process at their own pace.

My calm, one-to-one approach focuses on creating positive experiences filled with patience, reassurance, cuddles, and gentle

handling — helping your puppy grow into a confident little salon visitor for years to come.

DO YOU GROOM NERVOUS DOGS?

Absolutely. We specialise in calm, one-to-one grooming and take time to help anxious dogs feel comfortable. Let's book a meet and greet and discuss your dog's needs further.

MY DOG IS MATTED, WHAT WILL YOU DO?

Your dog’s comfort, health, and wellbeing will always come first. Severely matted coats can be extremely uncomfortable and, in

some cases, painful for dogs, often pulling tightly on the skin and restricting airflow.

For this reason, heavily matted coats may need to be clipped short or fully shaved in the interest of your dog’s welfare.

Please note that de-matting is not included within the standard grooming price and is charged at £1 per minute. This additional fee

helps cover the extra time required, along with the increased wear and tear placed on grooming equipment.

Many breeds — particularly curly and long-coated breeds such as Cockapoos — are naturally prone to matting and require regular

brushing and coat maintenance at home between grooming appointments.

Where possible, I will always try to preserve your dog’s coat. However, under the guidelines of the Animal Welfare Act, prolonged

or severe matting can be considered a welfare issue and removing the coat may sometimes be the kindest and safest option.

I will always discuss this with you fully before proceeding and gain your consent prior to clipping or shaving a matted coat. I am also

happy to offer advice on home grooming routines, brushing techniques, and future coat maintenance to help achieve the style and

coat condition you would like for your dog.

Please note that severely matted dogs may require additional time and, in some cases, more than one grooming appointment.

Battle is a beautiful historic town, famous for the 1066 Battle of Hastings and Battle Abbey, with independent shops, cafés and places to explore while your dog is being groomed. The town is easily accessible by road and also has its own railway station, making it convenient to reach from surrounding areas.

You'll also find Google Maps directly below these FAQs to help you plan your journey to the grooming cottage.

CAN I STAY WITH MY DOG?

For the safety and wellbeing of both dogs and humans, only myself is permitted within the grooming area during grooming appointments.

This helps create a calm, quiet, and safe environment where dogs are able to relax and focus without additional distractions or excitement.

While your dog is being groomed, there are plenty of lovely places to visit in and around historic Battle, whether you'd like to grab a coffee, browse the local shops, enjoy a walk or explore some of the town's history. Take a look at our Places to Visit While Your Dog is Being Groomed page for some ideas.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

IS THERE DROP-OFF PARKING?

Please kindly park outside the entrance to the Marley Close and walk up to my home where possible.

As this is a small residential area with mainly resident-only parking for the elderly, your consideration and cooperation are very much appreciated in helping me remain respectful to my neighbours.

Thank you so much for your understanding and support.
